Inn at Valley Farms Awarded Keene’s Green Business of the Year Award

My family and I were incredibly honored to have our New Hampshire bed and breakfast and farm awarded the 2010 Keene Green Business of the Year Award at last week’s Monadnock Earth Festival held at the Ashuelot River Park in Keene, NH. Keene’s Green Business of the Year award is given annually to recognize socially responsible businesses that have developed innovative and committed practices or programs resulting in environmental improvements, cost savings, energy conservation, environmental stewardship, greenhouse gas reductions, or resource use efficiency.

Our business was chosen to receive this year’s prestigious award due to our commitment and dedication across the board to green efforts and sustainability. Green practices we’ve adopted include among others, comprehensive recycling and composting (including vermicomposting), extensive use of locally grown food, use of green cleaning products, use of recycled content paper products, energy efficient appliances and lighting throughout the Inn. Our pasture-based farm was also praised for its commitment to sustainable farming practices including no-till gardening, intensive rotational grazing, continually reviewing operations, purchasing, and farming practices for improvement and our commitment to education of our guests and customers through agritourism events, public tours, and an on-site interpretive center created in partnership with Antioch New England Graduate School students.

The Works Bakery and Café and Yankee Lanes were two other Keene business nominations recognized for their green efforts at the event. Last year’s award winner was Keene based Filtrine Manufacturing. The honor was awarded by the Keene Cities for Climate Protection Committee in partnership with the Hannah Grimes Center, the Monadnock Sustainability Network and the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce.
