Walpole Valley Farms Receives 2011 NH Farm of Distinction Award

Our sign that will soon be proudly displayed!

I’m thrilled to announce that our farm was recently awarded the New Hampshire Farm of Distinction award at this year’s annual Farm and Forest Expo in Manchester, NH! The NH Farm of Distinction program was started in 1997 as a way to recognize NH farms that go above and beyond when it comes to aesthetics and cleanliness. Four farms were handpicked by an independent panel of agricultural leaders, historic preservationists, and the general public to receive this year’s award.

The recipients of the award must be commercial working farms with a visible sign that strive to keep their operations neat and orderly. The farm must exhibit a stewardship for the land that is a positive example of agriculture in New Hampshire. Equipment must be clean and stored properly, buildings, fences, and hedgerows kept in good condition, and sanitary conditions must be met for all livestock.

It has been a long road leading to the award one which began in 1998 when my parents purchased the dilapidated 105-acre farm to save it from development. We began by extensively renovating the 1774 Colonial home on the property and opening as a NH bed and breakfast/ farm stay in the fall of 1999. Although our family has always had extensive gardens and some animals on the farm we have consistently increased our operations over the years and are now a thriving multi-generation diversified farm raising 100% grass-fed beef, pastured chickens, turkeys, eggs, pastured pork, cashmere goats, and an extensive array of vegetables, herbs and edible flowers. It is from this bounty that we feed our three families and inn guests as well as sell to customers either directly from the farm or through several local outlets.

We are so thankful for the tremendous support our local community and guests have given us over the years and truly feel blessed to live in such beautiful (and bountiful) surroundings. We pledge to continue to responsibly steward the land for future generations and look forward to greeting you here on the farm! Check our schedule for our monthly farm tours and/or special discounts for an overnight stay in our green lodging.

Congratulations go out to the other three 2011 NH Farm of Distinction winners: Alyson’s Orchard also of Walpole, Stoneridge Farm of Bradford, and Zorvino Vineyards and Winery of Sandown.
